I've blogged previously about my Kansas City Real Estate Cell Phone policy - and yesterday was no different.
"Goodmorning, this is Fran White, how may I help you?"
This (what seemed to be) nice young man replied, "Hi, I found your name on this website and I am needing and agent in Jackson County."
Sounded good to me, so I replied, "Of course, that's me, what can I do for you?"
As it turns out, it was just another real estate lead company wanting to sell me leads.
I politely told him I wasn't trying to be rude, but I'm not paying for leads. His response was,
"What, you don't want to work with our clients?"
I responded with, "That's not what I said, I said I wasn't paying for leads.."
He said, "well I found you on this website." I told him if he found me, so did at least 200 other people within the last week.
He kept it up, talking about his company and they only charge me when they have a lead for me... I finally ended the conversation with,
"You are very good at your job, I'm not paying for leads and have a nice day." CLICK
So for those of you out there that know... are these companies not bound by the Do Not Call List because I have a business website for Kansas City MO Real Estate with my phone number?

Damion: I'll try telling them to put me on their DNC list..... thanks.
Suzanne: Creative idea!! Thanks!
The Marriotts' idea is a fantastic one. I have used Tony's script at least ten times in the past month on the lead companies.
I also ask them how they found me. When they respond "The internet" , I usually answer "Right. Any more questions?"
I just read Tony's script -
I don't know how I missed it- but i can't wait for the next lead company to call me
Heh, Heh - might as well have a little fun......
Brian... EXCELLENT
Marc: Want me to call yo uso you can practice? (just kidding)
Fran,
I have to double check the DNC laws, but I seem to remember that if you are actively advertising your phone number (making it public outside normal directory means - internet directory, local phone book, etc), then your number is no longer subject to the DNC list if the call is being made in referrence to the way you advertise it. For instance, you are using your number as is and you get a call from someone wanting to sell leads for your business, as you mentioned. It is related to what you advertise, But if someone calls wanting to sell you a vacation package for two to anywhere in the US, that is in violation. Has nothing to do with your business.
As Damion mentioned, you can request to be placed on the companies DNC list. If they call you again, you can report them. I would recommend keeping a log of those companies that call you and if you told them DNC. I would also follow that call with a call to the DNC aothorities to let them know that they called and that you asked them to remove you from the list (acts as as a second record.) Usually, if you report someone to the DNC authorities, the first call is a freebie. After that, they could be fined up to $10,000 per offense.
Thanks Jason,
That explains it really clearly and makes total sense!
Fran-
Actually, I was going to call Tony and pretend to be selling leads!
But, I didn't - it's probably happened a hundred times already.
Thanks Don.... Judge Mathis huh? My husband likes to watch Judge Judy, but I can't hardly stand to watch those court shows. Well I guess I'm not much of a television watcher at all.
